How to successfully persuade people

At the Entrepreneurship panel at the Haas Asian Business conference this past weekend Umair Khan, CEO of SecretBuilders said that the entrepreneur has one job to persuade people. You have to persuade everyone–your smarter classmates to work with you for free, your angels to invest, and your customers to buy.

That’s great advice. But for many its a daunting prospect. Especially those who may be the visionary or technical arm of a business. Each time they are in a selling environment such people may shy away due to thoughts like: “I don’t want to be pushy” or “i don’t want to interrupt” or “this person is not really interested.”

If this describes you I highly recommend you check out Robert Middleton’s Action Plan Marketing.

I just finished reading about some of his ideas in his free report. Here are the steps in a marketing conversation according to Robert. Incidentally these techniques also hold true of persuasion:

  • telling–talk of the results you have helped past clients achieve. Don’t talk about process yet.
  • listening–hear the client talk about their problems, needs, and goals.
  • asking–ask them for permission to send them information and get a preferred time and method of following up

Do check out his website. He has some great information there which can be helpful to entrepreneurs and others who are looking to develop their promotional skills.
