Startup Dynamics: Confidence gives credibility even when avoiding questions

One of the people I worked with recently is notorious for avoiding direct answers to questions. While he has says he has ADD, the occasions in which he dodges questions seem to conveniently occur when it is in his interest to hide information or his lack of knowledge. I have noticed him doing this with other colleagues and it seems to work in many situations, with many people.

I was wondering why and then I came across this research titled “When avoiding the question is the best answer.” It made me think that while my colleague dodges questions, he responds with confidence. ThisĀ  is very effective. It makes people not notice the dodge and view him as credible. In the research people even misremembered the original question when someone dodged questions with confidence.

I believe however that if done repeatedly people eventually notice and you loose credibility. In any case dodging questions with confidence may be an effective technique once in a while, explaining why so many people do this in business negotiations and conversations.
